Office Party

This week I used an advertisement to create this page with the Office Party Kit. (If you haven't picked one up yet, there are just a few still available in the store HERE.) I almost hesitate to show you the ad I used, because my page didn't end up looking much like it at all. LOL! But I figure that is okay. :) I really used it as a jumping off point and then let the elements of my page direct me as I put them together.

Here is the ad I started from.



See that swoop along the bottom. That is where I began . . . can you see it on my page? No?! LOL! I know. It sort of got hidden as I built my other elements. :) I actually was going to cradle my photo and journaling underneath that swoop, but decided along the way that I liked the look of the artisan label chipboard shape holding my photo more . . . so that became my focus. :)



I went to add the circle element on the top left and it just didn't feel right for my photo . . . like it was out of scale or something. So I decided to invert the circle and have it coming from behind the photo instead. Then . . . I just created from there. :)



I used Virginia's Tool Play article about the paint brush to add some depth to this page. I painted the edges of a lot of my elements with Walnut Ink. I love the rustic look! Thanks, V!



My title was inspired by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band song "I Love Only You". I added a Zva Creative pearl flourish from my stash to add a decorative element to the title.

Ad Challenge: Office Party!

I love to look through magazines for scrapbooking inspiration and this ad for Bose radios in a recent issue of Ladies' Home Journal caught my eye. I liked the iPod playlist in the background with the radio and iPod in the front. 

I tore out the ad and used it as the inspiration for this layout of my husband with our daughters. When the girls were really young and crying a lot, the one thing that would bring "instant calm" to our lives was for them to sit outside in the glider with daddy. I used the Pink Paislee and Basic Grey patterned paper to create a circle (the playlist in the ad) to ground two of my photos. The block of light blue in the ad became another photo (a shot of our deck and back of the house to add context to the other photos). 

Here's a close-up of my title and the Lily Bee canvas flower that I layered with Basic Grey stickers. 

I inked the Making Memories alphabet for extra dimension and machine stitched across the bottom to ground them to the layout. 

Finally, I added a little more machine stitching for added visual interest.

What I liked about this ad is how different it is than a lot of the ads you see - the balance is sorta wonky, two focal points, and pretty basic. But for some reason, I like it.

Ad Inspiration with the Sunkissed Kit

Let Summer begin! How did you decide to kick off your summer? My kids spent the first few days soaking in the hot tub and sloshing around on the Slip-N-Slide! :) I pulled out the NEW Sunkissed kit to capture this very "official" beginning of Summer 2010.

I love print ads from magazines. It's one of my favorite places to go to for new inspiration. I have a special folder on my desktop where I save the ads I find online. This week, I challenged myself to use this shoe advertisement by Adidas.



The vertical strips of bright color were the first thing that caught my eye. I replicated the stripes using papers by Echo Park and Cosmo Cricket. I used the shoes to inspire my photo placement.



I wanted the bright colors from the photos and paper to pop off the page, so I chose to use black cardstock as my background, rather than the white like in the advertisement.

I needed a way to ground my title across the top of the page and decided make a banner across the top of the page using the Imaginisce stamp from the Sunkissed Kit. I stamped the image several times on white cardstock, colored in the edges using markers and then cut them out. I added an additional layer underneath them by punching scalloped circles from yellow cardstock.



The yellow letters felt pale on the white cardstock, so I took a cue from Brittny's page last week and matted them on black paper. (Thanks, Britt!)I love the casual, cartoon feeling they have with that black edge! :)



As a final touch I added a few flowers to my journal block to mimick the flower-looking Adidas logo at the bottom of the advertisement. The Maya Road sheer Black birds help to ground the journaling block and label sticker.

Today I have an ad challenge for you. I love google and searching for inspiration and I came across 4 ad's in particular that just stood out to me. But this one kept calling my name. It was a combination of the colors and the circles...

The Story of My Name & Ad Inspiration

There's a new challenge posted on the Noel Mignon Challenge Blog today, The Me, Myself & I challenge. For this one we were challenged to scrapbook about our names and any special stories behind them. It's not often I take the time to scrapbook about myself, so this was lots of fun!



I used the Playdate kit to create my page. I am in LOVE with the Jillibean Kraft cardstock included in the kits lately. I used the Bed of Roses Spritz by Shimmerz paints (one of my very favorite Spritz colors!) from the kit on the background.

Wondering how to get those delicious, giant drips? Simply shake up your bottle, then unscrew the mister. Take the mister out and use the tube as a "dropper" to place your drips exactly where you would like them. :)

I liked the way the background looked and didn't want to cover it up. I decided to stitch a border to contain my page elements where I would normally add a layer of paper. It worked out great and was a fun change of pace.

Inspiration from a Starbucks ad

Starbucks must have the best graphic designers in their employ. I always love their ads, the cover art to their cds, their gift cards, their mugs...

This ad grabbed my eye in a copy of Real Simple magazine. I loved the burlap, textured background, the mix of bright and subdued colors, and the symmetry.

I recreated these same elements for this layout, using the Sonoma County kit.

Ad Challenge!

Last month we were challenged to use this ad/colorboard in a challenge and I decided to take it a step further and use it for my ad challenge today!
There is so much to gather from this colorboard... first off the (well duh) beautiful color scheme and then I just love the way it's arranged and I chose to follow both the color scheme and arrangement for my layout below!

Friday Ad Challenge

Hello there - Friday at last!  I have an Ad Challenge for you today.  I have been much better lately of cutting out those ads that remind me of a scrap page.  I keep them in a binder and go to them as a resource when all my mojo is gone - LOL!  But since my scanner is out of order at the time I chose one that I found online.  Which I found there are MANY resources online if you ever need them.  I found this adorable vintage ad that I just 'had' to use.

First, I just love the colors - so beautiful and Springy right? But besides that I really liked the clean design that is easy to replicate.

I used my 'Lean on Me' challenge layout to interpret this ad.

I hope you give this challenge a try - it is a lot of fun!
